The material of the future: Lyocell - what is worth knowing?

How is lyocell made?

Lyocell production technology has been known since the 1970s, but only in recent years, along with the trend toward ecology, has this material become popular. It's made from wood cellulose , which is dissolved into a pulp, which is then transformed into fiber, which is then spun into threads and then fabric. Interestingly, the substances used in this process to decompose the wood are non-toxic and safe, significantly different from those used in the production of other popular fabrics. Both lyocell itself and the substances used in its production can be reused.

Did you know that… just like wood itself, old lyocell clothes that are composted will decompose within a few months.

What is lyocell good for?

It's a durable material, yet just as breathable as cotton. However, it has a distinctive "noble" look that's lacking in a regular cotton T-shirt. This makes lyocell an increasingly popular choice for office wear, which is both comfortable and stylish. Lyocell's smooth surface and unique properties allow dyes to penetrate the fibers exceptionally well, and the colors in the finished garments are vibrant. Such garments fade more slowly. The production costs of this material are higher than those of viscose or cotton, but its properties make it an increasingly popular choice for our collections.

Something new is coming: our lyocell clothes

This breathable fabric works best in airy, summery clothes like dresses, T-shirts, and even pajamas. Lyocell blouses have a distinctive smoothness and sheen, making them suitable for all occasions. This sheen also makes lyocell suitable for "thicker" workwear, like our Bono Gray Lyocell Jacket . We've found that combining fibers like lyocell and viscose in one fabric also produces interesting effects. This is how our Mood dress was created —shiny, yet simple and refined.

How to care for lyocell? Our advice

The question remains: how to care for lyocell. Do I need to do anything special, or will standard washing and ironing suffice? Below are our tried-and-true methods:

  • The material itself has hypoallergenic properties, and its breathability keeps it fresh longer than other fabrics. Therefore, it doesn't require washing at high temperatures. It can also be dried in the sun.
  • Whenever possible, it is best to hand wash lyocell clothes.
  • A big advantage of lyocell clothes is that they do not crease when hung to dry, but they can also be ironed (using a manual program and a lower temperature, if possible).
  • Avoid drying in automatic dryers.

We hope that thanks to the above tips, your lyocell clothes will last for an exceptionally long time.
